Anyone can plonk some flowers on a canvas and call it a textile design. The art is in the building of the layout. An all-over print should have flow, balance and interest. Sara, our head of design shows you how she approaches an all-over floral layout using pre-existing elements from The Creative Elements. To help you follow her process, we’re giving you the exact same elements. Download them here and start designing!
1. PLACE YOUR ELEMENTS ON THE BLANK CANVAS
“I start with all my elements on my page down the bottom so I can see what I have to work with,” Sara says. Put each one on a different layer so they can be moved around independently.
2. CREATE YOUR FIRST BUNCH
A floral design is usually comprised of a few interesting bunches that have a combination of flowers in bloom, stems, buds and leaves. “Creating a variety of bunches that compliment each other is key to achieving a design with focus and flow. I rotate and play with the scale of the elements as I go in order to create movement.”
4. DUPLICATE AND EDIT ELEMENTS
“I select some of the same elements and change the colour to create even more elements than I originally had.”
5. STEP BACK FROM YOUR DESIGN
“After creating a few bouquets I have decided there is one element I no longer require and I will delete it from my canvas.”
6. COMPLETE THE DESIGN
“I can now start playing with layout and filling up my canvas to create my finished design.”
